Abraxas High School Alternative Programs Poway Adult School Poway Virtual Courses

Abraxas High School is a continuation high school that serves students who benefit from educational environment that is smaller, more intimate, and more flexible than the comprehensive high schools.

For students who may be at risk of not receiving a high school diploma, Abraxas serves a role for hundreds of students to make high school graduation a reality. Abraxas is recommended for students age 17 to 19 who may be as much as 50 short of the required high school graduation credits. Regular attendance at Abraxas is required, Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM - 1:15 PM each day.

Please be advised the Abraxas curriculum does not meet the A-G requirements for UC and CSU. However those wishing to pursue higher education do so through the Community College system.

Alternative Programs provides programs, services and resources to students and families throughout the Poway Unified School District including appropriate instructional strategies, sound curriculum, personal development activities, a strong partnership between home and school, and a systemic approach to prevention and early intervention. Examples of programs: 

Home Schooling;

Hospital/Home Instruction;

New Directions;

Summer School;

Teen Parents;

Youth in Transition

With parent and counselor consent, concurrently enrolled high school students may make up high school credit by attending classes in the evenings through Poway Adult School on a space-availiable basis.

Instrucitonal options available include Iindependent Study (meeting weekly with an instructor, completing assignments, and demonstrating mastery of the materials), the Learning Center (a supportive, classroom environment with learning opportunities using computer-assisted instruction), and direct instruction in a classroom setting.

For students wishing to make up credit, accelerate their learning, or explore subjects not offered at their school site, Poway Virtual Courses offers a varity of online and blened online courses to students from around the District. Some courses require weekly face-to-face meetings (blended) and others only meet face-to-face for exams.

New Directions
Career Technical Educaiton Online Classes
Mission to Graduate New Directions Career Technical Education Site Based Online Courses

Mission to Graduate is a web-based instructional program offering support to students who are behind in credits and/or not currently enrolled in school and who wish to earn a diploma and prepare for college and/or vocational training. A typical student in the Mission to Graduate is a senior one year or more behind in credits, a current drop out, and/or a home hospital student, who would benefit from an education offered “any time, any place”.

New Directions Independent study is a public education alternative meant to meet students’ needs, interests, and learning styles while ensuring that students can meet their school district’s curriculum and graduation requirements. All fulltime independent study students are required to do the same amount and quality of study and to meet the same curriculum and graduation requirements as other students in their district, but independent study students may do so in a manner and on a schedule better suited to their needs.

Concurrently enrolled high school students needing to make up credit for high school graduation may take career-technical education classes offered by Regional Occupation Program at various sites throughout the District after school and in the evenings. These courses are designed to provide students with the opportunity to apply academic skills, explore and prepare for careers, and develop leadership skills,-- and ultimately to provide students with the skills necessary for a successful transition to postsecondary education and the workforce.
